A modern earthquake rocked southwestern Greece last week, but there were no reports of damage or injuries. The 4.1magnitude quake occurred under the ocean, west of Athens.

A 4.2 magnitude quake hit Iran last week as well. No reports of damage or injuries have been reported there, either.

Recently, quakes have been felt in El Salvador and off an island in Japan. There have been minor quakes in Ohio and New York City.

A Scottish tourist who died mysteriously in Israel may have been a member of the secret organization known as theKnights Templar. Israeli journalist Barry Chamish says that he has evidence that the heart was removed after his death,as part of an ancient ritual. Israeli officials claim that the removal took place during a routine autopsy, but couldoffer no explanation of why it was not returned to the family with the other remains. A heart that was later given tothem by Israeli health officials could not be verified as being the heart of Alisdair Rosslyn Sinclair.

Sinclair made an unexplained five-day visit to Israel in April, 1998. He was arrested as he tried to leave the countryand died in police custody.

Europe is in a panic over Mad Cow Disease, to the point that long-time meat eaters have become vegetarians and zookeepers in Germany are surreptitiously slaughtering zoo animals for food.

In humans the mad cow prion produces Kreutzfield-Jacob Syndrome. It’s a horrible way to die. First you have moodswings, then numbness and hallucinations. Next, it’s uncontrollable body movements, then a dementia that mimicsAlzheimer’s, except that it can strike people who are still young.

After an aerial reconnaissance of the area devastated by last week’s earthquake, Indian Defense Minister George Fernandes says that one hundred thousand people may be dead and two hundred thousand or more injured.

In scenes reminiscent of the aftermath of a nuclear disaster, thousands of injured are jamming areas around overwhelmed hospitals as the true immensity of this disaster becomes more clear. From the heart-rending report that three hundred and fifty schoolchildren were killed while on parade–an entire school–to the shocked horror of government officials who are realizing that whole villages and towns are dead, the stories of the quake suggest a catastrophe of world-historic proportions.
