Despite our feminist politicians, it hasn’t happened here: British Prime Minister’s wife Cherie Blair told the Saudi ambassador to Britain that his country has an “appalling image” in the West because they treat women not as equals, but as “some sort of other.”

Marie Woolf writes in the Independent that Blair made her remarks to Prince Turki al-Faisal, the Saudi ambassador to Britain. She said it’s important to change the “perception of Islam being backward-looking, oppressive?somehow not as good as Western Christianity.” Mrs. Blair, who is a Catholic, added, “Some of you know my own religion has not always been in the forefront of women’s rights, and indeed still isn’t, sadly.”

Instead of giving power plants in each state the same pollution guidelines, the government’s new Clear Skies Initiative will let them “buy and sell” emissions. This means that older plants can put off installing expensive new equipment by purchasing emissions allowances from newer, less polluting plants. Older cities already have the most air pollution, partly due to their older power plants, and this means they will remain more dangerous places to live. And now researchers have discovered that long-term exposure to the particulates in air pollution causes heart disease, as well as respiratory problems.
