Slavery isn’t dead. The Master of the Key said that in order to fulfill our desire of consumer goods, each of us has 5 slaves, and in some places, this is still literally true.

BBC news reports that a human rights group in the African country of Niger claims that there are up to 43,000 people living there as slaves, who are bought and sold for a few thousand dollars. A recent lawsuit by one of them against the government, for allowing this to go on, has brought this scandal to light. Many slaves are taken from their mothers by slave traders at around 2 years old, as soon as they are no longer breast feeding.

Pollution really ruins the joys of life: we know that air pollution is making it hard to breathe and affecting birds (but in a positive way), and now it turns out that it’s reducing the scent of flowers as well!

Air pollution from power plants and automobiles is destroying the fragrance of flowers. Not only does this affect the beauty of nature, it also makes it harder for insects to find the flowers they need to pollinate but, as researcher Jose D. Fuentes says, “This makes it increasingly difficult for pollinators to locate the flowers?and the more air pollution there is in a region, the greater the destruction of the flower scents.”

A crisis is looming over water shortages worldwide. By 2025 more than half the nations in the world will face freshwater stress or shortages and by 2050 as much as 75% of the world’s population could face freshwater scarcity. There is a 50% chance Lake Mead, a key source of water for millions of people in the southwestern United States, will be dry by 2021, due to global warming.
