Geographer Jared Diamond points out that, for most of history, people lived in small groups as hunter-gatherers. Agriculture began 11,000 years ago, and state government is only half that old. But Diamond, who has spent years studying the tribes living in the jungles of Papua New Guinea, thinks we can still learn from traditional societies like these.

Reduced air circulation and cold winter temperatures have combined to create what is one of the most intense pollution events in history over China. Unhealthy polluted air blankets three fourths of a country the size of Europe. It’s as if the entire United States east of the Mississippi was choking under a cloud of pollution at a level considered "extremely hazardous" in Western countries. Today and tomorrow, families of the victims of the Aurora theater massacre will be allowed to enter the facility in order to participate in a time of remembrance. The theater complex, which has been closed since the shootings, is scheduled to re-open on Thursday.
