Is massage really a healing touch? (NOTE: Subscribers can still listen to this show). A massage can make your immune system stronger, so you’re more able to fight off colds and flu. Researchers report that people who undergo massage experience measureable changes in their body’s immune system. Psychiatrist Mark Rapaport says, "Massage is popular in America, with almost 9% percent of adults receiving at least one massage within the past year. People often seek out massage as part of a healthy lifestyle but there hasn’t been much physiological proof of the body’s heightened immune response following massage until now." In his study, 29 people received 45 minutes of Swedish massage and 24 received 45 minutes of light touch massage. After a resting period, blood samples were collected from each person, which revealed an elevated immune response.
