Concussions are a brain injury caused by a hard hit, and they are not to be taken lightly. As many as 3.8 million athletes (especially football players) suffer a concussion each year in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Concussion should be suspected in the presence of one or more symptoms, such as headaches, blurred vision, nausea or vomiting, cognitive impairment, abnormal or erratic behavior, drowsiness or slurred speech.
Surgeon Jim Johnston says, "Concussions are significantly more of an issue than originally thought. If you have one concussion you are more likely to suffer from subsequent concussions."
Surgeon Marshall Crowther says, "It can be any instance of trauma that causes these, and it doesn’t have to be a direct blow to the head–it can be a direct blow to the body that sends a strong enough force up to the head."
Players should be removed from the game immediately and have a medical assessment if any symptoms develop. One of the biggest problems with concussions is that they can lead to early-onset Alzheimer’s.
But there now may be a CURE for that dreaded condition: Researchers have for the first time directly converted human skin cells into functional forebrain neurons, without the need for stem cells of any kind. The findings offer a new and potentially more direct way to produce replacement cell therapies for Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases. It’s truly another medical miracle.
