Athletes: Forget the Human Growth Hormone–go BANANAS. In the past, we’ve told you that chocolate milk is a better energy builder for athletes than the sports drinks they imbibe. But now we’ve learned that they need to FRUIT UP!
Bananas are a great source of energy for endurance and recreational athletes because they’re rich potassium, which is what those sports drinks are designed to replace. Researcher David C. Nieman says, "We wanted to see which was more beneficial when consumed during intense cycling–bananas or a carbohydrate sports drink. We found that not only was performance the same whether bananas or sports drinks were consumed, there were several advantages to consuming bananas."
And what about those after-game aches and pains? Tart cherries are the solution, and they may help reduce inflammation for people who are suffering from arthritis as well. Researcher Kerry Kuehl says, "With millions of Americans looking for ways to naturally manage pain, it’s promising that tart cherries can help, without the possible side effects often associated with arthritis medications. I’m intrigued by the potential for a real food to offer such a powerful anti-inflammatory benefit–especially for active adults."
Be honest now: are you a fit, active adult–or a fat couch potato who just watches sports on TV? One of the best ways to stay healthy is eating right and exercise, which can be as pleasant as a brisk daily walk. In Anne Strieber’s diet book, she has a special chapter on exercise titled "The Tyranny of the Body," in which she states unequivocally that walking is the very best exercise there is.
