The hactivist group Anonymous has released a video calling on it’s members to launch cyberattacks on Donald Trump’s websites, beginning on April 1. “We need you to shut down his websites, research and expose what he doesn’t want the public to know. We need you to dismantle his campaign and sabotage his brand.”
“Dear Donald Trump, we have been watching you for a long time, and what we see is deeply disturbing,” states a Guy Fawkes-masked announcer. “You have shocked the entire planet with your appalling actions and ideals.”
“You say what your current audience wants to hear, but in reality you don’t stand for anything except your personal greed and power."
Since it’s emergence in 2003, the public face of Anonymous has evolved from a loose collection of pranksters into what might be considered a more civic-minded group, using their hacking skills to uncover and publicly disclose information about hate groups such as the Klu Klux Klan and Westboro Baptist Church, and to shut down online communication links used by ISIL. One must bear in mind that their methods are still considered illegal — but then far too many of Trump’s campaign promises are considered to be just as unlawful.
Needless to say, Anonymous is not the first entity to start dismantling Trump: last month, Last Week Tonight host John Oliver aired a segment exposing what is publicly known about Trump’s dirty laundry, albeit information on Trump’s personal and business history that has been conveniently forgotten by the majority of the public.
Even President Barack Obama has denounced Trump’s campaign, stated in his speech at the recent Friends of Ireland luncheon: “Too often, we’ve accepted this as somehow the new normal. And it’s worth asking ourselves what each of us may have done to contribute to this vicious atmosphere in our politics," he said, addressing the luncheon’s attendees.
“And while some may be more to blame than others for the current climate, all of us are responsible for reversing it, for it is a cycle that is not an accurate reflection of America. And it has to stop.”
