Are modern ghost hunters seeking answers, or opening dangerous doors to forces they don’t understand? Step out of the everyday world and uncover the dark secrets behind legendary hauntings, the booming business of dark tourism, and the controversial legacy of Ed and Lorraine Warren.
In this gripping episode of The Mystical Underground, hosts Trish and Rob MacGregor sit down with prolific paranormal author, music journalist, and researcher Maxim W. Furek to discuss his latest book, The Scream of the Haunted House. Together, they take a deep dive into historical and modern hauntings, exploring why our culture remains obsessed with the macabre. Maxim pulls back the curtain on the real-life Smurl haunting, the lingering mysteries of Amityville, the shocking sudden death of Dan Rivera (lead investigator and handler of the Annabelle doll), and the emerging multi-million-dollar industry of commercial ghost hunts. And take a journey into the uncharted territory where human psychology, egregores, and the spirit realm collide!
● The Demonologist Legacy: Maxim reflects on his decades-long relationship with Ed and Lorraine Warren, comparing Hollywood’s sensationalized The Conjuring franchise against the terrifying ground truth of the 1980s Smurl family case.
● The Curse of Annabelle & Dan Rivera: A candid look into the Devil’s on the Run tour, the tragic death of Dan Rivera just days after meeting Maxim, and the million-dollar relocation of the Warren Occult Museum to Salem.
● The Psychology of Hauntings: Examining Nandor Fodor’s theories on egregores, human psychic manifestation, and Shirley Jackson’s iconic template for haunted house lore in The Haunting of Hill House.
● The Business of “Dark Tourism”: Why overnight stays at places like the Stanley Hotel and the Hinsdale House command thousands of dollars—and whether sensationalizing evil comes at a dangerous spiritual cost.
● Rules of the Spirit Realm: The core ethical parameters seasoned investigators follow: why intention, patience, and absolute respect matter when navigating portals and earthbound entities.
● Government Remote Viewing & Shaver Mystery: Maxim, Trish, and Rob explore subterranean lore, Richard Sharpe Shaver, and the strange intersection of psychic spying, UFOs, and anomalous phenomena.
