After our popular Dreamland interview with Kristina Borjesson, author of ?Into the Buzzsaw? on Saturday night, about how big government and big media are influencing the media, one listener wrote: ?What can we do??
Kristina gives this answer: ?Do not feel helpless. There are things you can do that won’t swallow up your time or money.
?First, look for non-American sources and more independent American sources of news. The BBC is a good source. [Note: unknowncountry.com uses mainly foreign news sources?check our links at the bottom of each story]. There’s an economist named Michel Chossudovsky who puts out good information at globalresearch.ca. on the global view of what’s going on. Consortiumnews.com and Alternet.org are good internet sources. FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting) often has good information. There are lots of others.
?Secondly, spend time talking to people–your friends, your children, colleagues at work, etc., about these issues. If you are informed and they aren’t, you can get them to start thinking, which is great. This puts you in the position of being like the stone thrown into a pond. You’re influence reverberates way beyond just you and the people to whom you spoke directly.
?If you read about something to which you have a strong reaction, call or fire off a letter to your senator, congressman or local representative. Many people don’t do this because they feel it’s useless, but it’s not. Even if you don’t get a response or you get a form letter back, don’t stop communicating. It is VERY IMPORTANT to be engaged, to demonstrate however you can, that you care (which, by the way, you’ve done by sending your E-mail, which generated this response). Don’t expect anything, just do what you do because you know it’s the right thing to do. Directing your energy for good on even the smallest levels is very, very important.
?On a personal level, I try to remain conscious at all times that I’m connected to everyone on the planet. This inspires me and gives me the courage to do things I wouldn’t have considered doing before I decided to keep this constantly in mind.
