Every once in a while, a rumor comes along saying we have captured Osama bin-Laden. Then an audio or video tape is released by al-Qaeda, proving he’s still alive and free. Some of these tapes are more convincing than others. Now a U.S. congressman has hinted that we have Osama in captivity.
WorldNet Daily says that in a speech in India, reported by the Indo-Asian News Service, Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) said, “There are already rumors circulating that Osama bin Laden is being held somewhere already and it’s only that they are trying to decide what day they should bring him out.”
We do know where Osama and his militants are: they’re hiding in caves in the mountains between Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, that doesn’t mean we’re able to go in and get him. But we can watch him by satellite, causing him to restrict his movements.
Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said to Fox News: “Do you suppose that the Bush administration has Osama bin Laden hidden away somewhere and will bring him out before the election?”
There have also been rumors that Saddam was actually captured before it was announced and the videos were shown. If this was done, it would have been so that we could question him secretly about his supporters, then look for them without tipping them off.
However, Democrats have been nervous about this sort of thing ever since the U.S. hostages in Iran were suspiciously released right after Reagan was elected President.
We wouldn’t be so suspicious if there wasn’t so much rule by secrecy.
