As well as pollution, China has given us poisoned toothpaste, tainted pet food and dangerous lead-painted toys?and food scares as well?so what’s next? The answer: poisoned clothes.
In the August 20 edition of the Financial Times, Geoff Dryer warns that children?s clothes imported from China may contain dangerous levels of formaldehyde which are up to 900 times higher than the amount regarded as safe. Formaldehyde if applied to the clothes in order to prevent mildew, which can build up on clothes when they are stored in humid climates, but it can cause allergic reactions such as skin rashes and eye and throat irritations at these levels.
So many clothes are made in China these days, that it’s hard to avoid them. One way to help ameliorate this problem is to WASH all garments before wearing them.
