When we hear about some countries refusing to stop killing whales because they like whale meat, we can at least be happy to know that most of it is TOXIC, because sperm whales have built up stunningly high levels of toxic and heavy metals such as cadmium, aluminum, chromium, lead, silver, mercury and titanium–all of which are poisonous to humans.
Tissue samples taken from nearly 1,000 whales over 5 years reveal toxic metals in the ocean that have been digested by whales after being dumped in the ocean thousands of miles away. In Yahoo News, Arthur Max quotes biologist Roger Payne as saying, “These contaminants, I think, are threatening the human food supply. They certainly are threatening the whales and the other animals that live in the ocean. The entire ocean life is just loaded with a series of contaminants, most of which have been released by human beings.”
Sperm whales absorb the contaminants and pass them on to the next generation when a female nurses her calf. According to Payne, “What she’s actually doing is dumping her lifetime accumulation of that fat-soluble stuff into her baby. I don’t see any future for whale species except extinction.” But it’s not just whales that are in danger: Seafood is the primary protein for a billion human beings, worldwide. Max quotes Payne as saying, “You could make a fairly tight argument to say that it is the single greatest health threat that has ever faced the human species. I suspect this will shorten lives, if it turns out that this is what’s going on.”
