During the STS-80 mission, which was launched on November 19, 1996, the Space Shuttle Columbia took a crew of five astronauts on an 18 day trip around the Earth, the longest flight in the history of the shuttle. During the flight, astronaut Story Musgrave looked out the shuttle windows and saw a large, disc-shaped object. After years of silence, he’s finally started talking about it. The UFO was large–between 50 and 150 feet in diameter–and the outer rim was rotating in a counter-clockwise direction. During the incident, Musgrave said, "I don’t know what it is. Whether it’s a washer, debris, ice particles, I don’t know. But it’s characteristic of the thousands of things which I’ve seen. After you eat Thanksgiving dinner, you may find yourself getting sleepy, because turkey contains a natural sleep-inducing amino acid called tryptophan. This is GOOD because cutting back on sleep reduces the benefits of dieting BUT sleeping too much may cause you to die younger. When dieters in a new study got a full night’s sleep, they lost the same amount of weight as when they slept less. When dieters got adequate sleep, however, more than half of the weight they lost was fat. When they cut back on their sleep, only one-fourth of their weight loss came from fat. They also felt hungrier. When sleep was restricted, dieters produced higher levels of ghrelin, a hormone that triggers hunger and reduces energy expenditure.read more

If you work hard cooking that Thanksgiving dinner, you’ll not only enjoy it more, you’re likely to eat less of it. It’s commonly accepted that we appreciate something more if we have to work hard to get it, and a new study bears that out, at least when it comes to food. It seems to suggest that hard work can even enhance our appreciation for fare we might not favor, such as the low-fat, low calorie variety. At least in theory, this means that if we had to navigate an obstacle course to get to a plate of baby carrots, we might even prefer them to a Snickers bar.
