One of the most fantastic crop formations that has everappeared was immediately destroyed by an outraged farmereven after he was paid to allow time for scientificresearch. He accepted the payment, then, moments later,wrecked the formation with his tractor. Fortunately, famed Mexican UFO researcher Jaime Maussan, who has the right philosphy about UFOs and crop circles, was in the formation and managed to take the fine close-up photos reproduced here of the delicate, three-dimensional swirls that had appeared, two of which appear in this story.

It’s not just global warming, it’s El Nino – Is it HOT where you are this summer? The Pacific Ocean warming known as El Nino can disrupt weather patterns across the world. Over the next few months, there may be more drought in Africa, India and Australia, heavierrainfall in South America and increased extremes of hot and cold in Europe and the US. 2010 may end up being one of the hottest years on record. The 1997-98 El Nino, combined with global warming, made 1998 the world’s hottest year.

And don’t eat them! – A 62-year-old African woman living in Paris who tested positive for HIV is carrying a new strain of the virus which comes from gorillas. This was probably caused by eating illegally imported bush meat (monkey meat), which is considered a delicacy by many Africans living in Europe.

In the August 3rd edition of the Independent, Lewis Smith reports that the woman, who is from Cameroon, denies having contact with live gorillas or eating gorilla meat. However, meat from primates has been declared illegal in most European countries, since it can transmit both HIV and Ebola, so she may not want to admit buying it. Her HIV has not yet morphed into AIDS.

Allergies aren’t simple: people in different countries tend to have different food allergies. In one part of Europe, some people are allergic to the flesh of apples (but not the skin), while others are allergic only to the skin!

Greeks are rarely allergic to peanuts (an allergy that afflicts many children in the US), but many of them are allergic to melon (an allergy which is almost unheard of here). Some Italians are allergic to apples (another rare allergy in the US). In fact, hazelnuts and apples are common food allergies in Europe. Scientists still don’t understand why these regional differences exist.
