We’re all worried about the connection between global warming and greenhouse gas emissions. But every day, deforestation?especially cutting down trees in the world’s rainforests?releases as much carbon dioxide as most of the world’s automobile traffic.
In the Independent, Daniel Howden writes that “The accelerating destruction of the rainforests that form a precious cooling band around the Earth’s equator, is now being recognized as one of the main causes of climate change. Carbon emissions from deforestation far outstrip damage caused by planes and automobiles and factories.”
Howden quotes environmentalist Andrew Mitchell as saying, “Tropical forests are the elephant in the living room of climate change.”

The Chinese fought hard to gain the right to hold the 2008 summer Olympics in their country. But athletes have a major worry about competing there: air quality, since modern China is a heavily polluted place. If holding the Olympics there can influence China to clear up its air, it will improve pollution in the US as well.
