Italian researchers say eating pizza can protect against cancer. This is certainly more palatable than the latestcure from Thailand. They say eating pizza regularly reduces the risk of developing cancer of the esophagus by 59%. Colon cancer fell by 26% and mouth cancer by 34% among pizza eaters.

The reason could be the lycopene, the antioxidant chemical in tomatoes which is thought to protect against cancer.

Researcher Silvano Gallus looked at 3,300 people who developed cancer of the mouth, esophagus, throat or colon and compared them with 5,000 people who did not have cancer. He asked them how often they eat pizza, and found that those who ate it at least once a week had less chance of developing cancer.

Allan Hall writes for The Scotsman that recently discovered East German intelligence files reveal that tons of live ammunition, as well as fueled Nazi fighter planes, are buried in concrete bunkers beneath Schoenefeld airport, which is used by thousands of travelers every year.

When the Nazis were under pressure during the end of World War II, they buried the planes parked on the runway in concrete, rather than letting them fall into Soviet hands. “They would have stuffed them anywhere they could?there was simply too much stuff to blow up all at once,” says historian Karl-Heinz Eckhardt. “There was a warren of massive Nazi bunkers beneath the site of the present airport that would have suited their purposes.”

Andy Coghlan writes in New Scientist magazine about a marvelous way to clean up carbon dioxide?turn it into diamonds. “We are changing a waste gas into gems,” says Chinese researcher Qianwang Chen.

It’s even cheaper than the current method of creating manmade diamonds, which requires up five million atmospheres of pressure and ultra-high temperatures. Chen makes diamonds in only 12 hours by reacting CO2 with metallic sodium in a pressurized oven at a lower temperature and pressure.
