Terrorists have targeted our largest nuclear power plant, the Palo Verde plant near Phoenix, and security officials are looking for Iraqi “sleeper cells” that might carry out the attack. National Guard troops have been sent to guard the facility. And congress warns that millions of Americans are in danger if terrorists manage to successfully attack just a few of our 123 most dangerous chemical plants.

Officials say the report on the threat to the Palo Verde plant was “uncorroborated threat information” from classified intelligence reports distributed to law enforcement and security officials. Palo Verde is the largest nuclear power plant in the U.S., with three reactors that produce 30 billion kilowatt hours of electricity last year each year.

The poison ricin has been found inside a locker at the Gare de Lyon railway station in Paris. Ricin, a toxin found in castor beans, is 6,000 times more powerful than cyanide and can be ingested or inhaled. Officials say there were “two vials with a powder, a bottle filled with a liquid and two smaller bottles also containing a liquid” in the locker. The powder turned out to be iron perchloride, which is used for explosives, and there was also a small bottle of cyanide. French police had been watching the locker where the ricin was found, and hoped to arrest the terrorist when he came back to open it, but no one arrived.

There are conflicting reports about whether we hit Iraqi President Saddam Hussein in an early bombing attack on his house. One intelligence report says he was injured and is no longer functioning as commander of the government or the war. U.S. intelligence sources say they have not detected any communications from him since Wednesday. “The last thing a leader like Saddam Hussein wants to show is that he is incommunicado and no longer in control,” one of them says. “But that is exactly what has happened over the last 36 hours. He has not shown any signs of life.” One report says he was seen being taken out of his Baghdad home on a stretcher, with an oxygen mask over his face, after his house was struck by cruise missiles on Wednesday.read more
