Last January a spectacular fireball crossed British Columbia, witnessed by more than seventy people. A week later Jim Brook found black bits of a meteorite while driving on ice-covered Taglish lake in far northern British Columbia. Brook carefully collected two pounds of the material in a plastic bag and stored it in a freezer. Thanks to his careful handling, scientists have ended up in possession of one of the greatest treasure-troves ever to arrive from outer space.

The strange red UFO, a version of which appeared for many years over Gulf Breeze, Florida, has been appearing over Gilbert, Arizona near Phoenix since March. After a two month absence, it has been videotaped again on October 10 and 12.

The object hovers for long periods in the same place, appears to the naked eye to be a startling ruby or blood red, and has a red haze beneath its base. At times it maneuvers in a spectacular manner and has been seen to drop close to the earth.

NASA’s ACE spacecraft recorded an interplanetary shock wave heading toward Earth on October 12th at 2145 UT (5:45 pm EDT). Sky watchers should be on the alert for aurora between the times of local sunset on Oct. 12th and sunrise on Oct 13th. The bright full Moon will likely outshine faint aurora, but intense geomagnetic storms can produce auroras that are visible in spite of lunar interference. Early this morning magnetic fields around sunspot AR9182 became unstable.

A nearby solar filament explosively collapsed and a coronal mass ejection is now heading toward Earth. There could be aurora and other geomagnetic disturbances later this week when the leading edge of the CME hits our magnetosphere.
