Since the early twentieth century, fortune hunters have mounted expeditions deep into the rainforests of Honduras’s remote La Mosquitia region, searching for a fabled city called ‘La Ciudad Blanca’. In response to record-breaking warm, wet weather in Britain, professor Myles Allen of the Climate Research Programme at University of Oxford’s Environmental Change Institute, has declared normal weather to be a thing of the past.
Speaking in an interview with BBC’s Radio 4, Allen responded: “You asked ‘is this the new normal’, well as I stressed, normal weather, unchanged over generations, is now a thing of the past. And if we’re building buildings and building infrastructure, we’re going to have to use climate simulations to work out what the weather will be like that that infrastructure will have to tolerate in 50 years’ time.”

In an unprecedented event, two hurricanes have formed at the same time in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in the month of January, with the Pacific storm, breaking a record as such, and also exhibiting an unusual proximity to the equator. This is also the first time on record that off-season hurricanes have formed in both the Atlantic and Pacific in the same year; to have both form in the same month adds to the extreme unusuality of the event.

On January 6, 2016, officials from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea announced that they had successfully tested their first hydrogen fusion bomb in an underground detonation, in North Hamgyong Province. North Korea’s media claimed that this new weapon would be used as a self-defense measure against a U.S.-backed invasion, but experts are skeptical that the DRPK’s new weapon actually exists.
