Don’t set off for that long Thanksgiving holiday drive after watching a horror movie. People’s driving behaviors can be subtly influenced by emotionally charged images, and research has shown that people often drive more recklessly after viewing an action movie and more cautiously after seeing a relaxing film.

In the November 20th edition of the Wall Street Journal, Ann Lukits reports that after viewing photos of cute babies, people playing a computer driving game were quick to stop their simulated car during a yellow light. If they’d been watching violent photos, they probably would have driven right through it. This undoubtedly works the same way with any video games you might have been playing before getting behind the wheel.

There are lots of theories about what caused human evolution. Here’s a new one: cooking!

When humans invented cooking, it increased the number of calories they consumed, since heat breaks down cellulose in plants, making them more digestible and releasing the nutrients. Before the discovery of fire, we would have had to forage for 9 hours a day in order to get the same number of calories.

This could be the reason that other primates, such as gorillas, may have bodies 3 times larger than ours, but still have much smaller brains, despite the fact that they spent almost 8 hours a day foraging for food.

NASA has announced that one of the instruments on the Curiosity Rover has sent back some extraordinary data, but the transmission is still being checked to make certain that it is not a fluke, and so far the space agency has not made an official statement about what the instrument has detected.read more

Corn, tomatoes, cucumber, squash, eggplant, celery, beets, carrots, and mushrooms are all showing up in desserts such as tomato sorbet, corn crème brulée, and chocolate-beet baked goods. Some vegetables cook in similar ways to fruits. For example, eggplant can be a substitute in many recipes for apple or pear.
