A worldwide flood that took place 14,600 years ago is almost certainly the origin of some of the oldest of all human stories, the flood tales of Native America, the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh and Noah’s Flood.

Scientists now know that it was caused by a very rapid and intense warming event and the collapse of ice sheets all across the planet. But why did it happen?

One theory is that it was caused by a comet striking the Laurentian Ice Sheet above what is now the Great Lakes. This led to the disintegration of the ice sheet and a subsequent dramatic melt and rise in temperatures. It now appears almost certain that the Viking Lander’s life experiment succeeded, and that there is life on Mars. However, NASA interpreted the results too conservatively, and the chance to direct exploration of Mars toward the discovery of life was lost. Now, however, a new look at the results may change all that.

In the Daily Mail, Rob Waugh writes: "In July 1976, the Viking 1 probe touched down on Mars and failed to find traces of life–but now, three decades later, scientists think the experiment was flawed. Viking 1 did find evidence of extraterrestrial microbes in soil samples from the Red Planet."
