Are you lonely? Join he club: Although the average Facebook user has some 130 "friends," in reality, Americans have, on average, slightly more than two confidantes, down from three 25 years ago.

Sociologist Matthew Brashears says that although the social network "makes us potentially more vulnerable," the good news is that "we’re not as socially isolated as scholars had feared." Over the last few years, the average size of the group with whom we discuss important matters has shrunk by about one-third (from about three people to two).

A Warning–for What?

On Wednesday, November 9, 2011, FEMA, DHS and the FCC will conduct the first national test of the new Nationwide Emergency Alert System (EAS). This nationwide test will start at 2 pm EST (11 am Pacific) and run across all time zones. The 3 minute test will run concurrently on all radio and TV stations and it’s longer than it used to be (previous messages of this type lasted from 30 seconds to 1 minute). The updating the phrase that follows that loud beeping sound, followed by "This is only a test, it is ONLY a test. If it had been a real emergency (etc.)" message may be benign, but it could also indicate worry about an upcoming danger.read more

What’s Wrong With These People?

Whether or not cell phones are dangerous to their users, they’re dangerous to the REST OF US when drivers talk or text when at the wheel. We’ve all had accidents or close calls with drivers who are doing this. In 2010, the National Safety Council estimated that the cause of approximately 28% of all vehicle accidents–a total of 1.6 million annually–could be attributed to mobile phone usage.
