The latest breakthrough in cotton fiber research has scientists envisioning hospital gowns that monitor medical patients and jerseys that test athletic performance. Fiber scientist Juan Hinestroza has discovered how to turn everyday cotton into high-tech fabric, using gold nanoparticles and polymers, both of which are widely used in the electronics industry as components of integrated circuits, which control the functions of such common devices as phones, televisions and game consoles.

Those of us who watch our brave young soldiers on the TV news are often appalled by all the heavy equipment they have to carry, but soon they may be able to detect IEDs with a single sheet of paper.

Researchers have developed a prototype wireless sensor capable of detecting trace amounts of a key ingredient found in many explosives. The device, which employs carbon nanotubes and is printed on paper or paper-like material using standard inkjet technology, could be deployed in large numbers to alert authorities to the presence of explosives, such as improvised explosive devices.

A rod-shaped UFO was caught on video during the October 23rd NFL game between the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts. As NBC’s cameras returned from a commercial break, a couple of lit objects seemed to streak across the darkening sky behind a cathedral tower. The object moves behind the steeple of a cathedral, and therefore is too far from the camera lens to be an insect. It is also brightly lit, but there is no external light source to explain this. It moves much faster than an aircraft or balloon, and does not display the flight characteristics of either. The object is a present unidentified.
