The planet’s deep oceans at times may absorb enough heat to flatten the rate of global warming for periods of as long as a decade even in the midst of longer-term warming. According to a new analysis led by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), based on computer simulations of global climate, ocean layers deeper than 1,000 feet are the main location of the “missing heat” during periods such as the past decade when global air temperatures showed little warming.read more
A new study of interracial marriages in the United States since the 1980s suggests that the racial boundary between blacks and whites continues to break down–but is not yet close to disappearing. And sociologists have some advice for single black women who want to marry: If a black marriage partner is hard to find, they should look for a white spouse, as there is no longer a significant social barrier to interracial marriage.

Will medical miracles never cease? In early results from a clinical trial, genetically engineered T cells (a type of white blood cell) killed off leukemia cells. Two out of three patients who received this treatment have been cancer-free for over a year. T cells could be engineered to kill a range of cancers, including cancers of the breast and colon. And approximately 60 million people across the globe have chronic kidney disease, and many will need dialysis or a transplant. Breakthrough research shows that a patient’s OWN kidney cells can be gathered and reprogrammed.read more
