The mysterious Voynich manuscript, housed at Yale University, has been thought to be a forgery by some scholars (none of whom have been able to decipher it) but recent radiocarbon testing shows that its parchment pages date to the early 15th century. The book contains rows of text scrawled on visibly aged parchment, flowing around intricately drawn illustrations depicting plants, astronomical charts and human figures bathing in what may be the fountain of youth.read more

For 15 million years, a frozen lake has been hidden deep beneath Antarctica’s frozen crust, possibly concealing prehistoric or unknown (and perhaps dangerous) life. (NOTE: Subscribers can still listen to this show). Now Russian scientists are on the getting ready to discover its secrets.

The Russians have been drilling through the ice for weeks in a race to reach the bottom before the end of the Arctic summer. In CNews, Alissa de Carbonnel quotes polar researcher Alexei Turkeyev as saying, "There’s only a bit left to go."

The 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Christchurch, New Zealand on Feb. 22 demonstrates the vulnerability of urban centers with important lessons for the US. And a 30 million ton block of ice sheared off a New Zealand glacier just minutes after the violent earthquake there. Civil engineer Thomas D. O’Rourke says, "Some reasons for the serious damage are the many unreinforced masonry buildings in Christchurch and the occurrence of soil liquefaction throughout the city."
