Despite the recent freezing winter weather, 2010 tied with 2005 as the warmest year since record keeping began in 1880. The temperature of the earth was over one degrees higher than the 20th-century average the same as it was in 2005. It was the 34th consecutive year of above average temperatures. The last year that the temperature was BELOW average was 35 years ago, in 1976. Nine of the Earth’s 10 warmest years on record have occurred since 2001, and all 12 of the warmest years have occurred since 1997.

Neuroscientists are learning new tricks from professional magicians, as they struggle to understand how the brain works. Magicians take advantage of how our nervous systems, including our eyes and sense of touch, are wired to perceive "impossible" illusions (NOTE: Subscribers can still listen to this show). In Live Science.com, Wynne Parry quotes researcher Susana Martinez-Conde as saying, "Scientists have only studied cognitive illusions for a few decades. Magicians have studied them for hundreds, if not thousands, of years."

When time slip expert Starfire Tor joined Whitley on Coast to Coast AM on January 9, one of her predictions for 2011 was more meteor strikes. Her prediction has come true already: In Oklahoma, people recently star a "big ball of fire" streaking across the sky. It glowed slightly green, probably because it contained copper. The meteor was also seen in Mississippi and Florida.

A coma is mysterious–the person seems to be asleep, but is impossible to wake up. Wounded Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was put into an induced coma in order to help her brain heal. Anne Strieber experienced this when an aneurysm burst in her brain. Neurologists are trying to figure out how to help these patients by studying how anesthesia works, because the brain under general anesthesia isn’t "asleep" as surgery patients are often told–it is placed into a state that is a reversible coma.
