We wait for economic recovery, but it doesn’t come. Millions of us remain unemployed. Whole neighborhoods, street after street, are abandoned, their residents victims of foreclosure. Washington is paralyzed. But the problem isn’t ours alone. Europe is on the brink of fiscal collapse. The Chinese stock market is teetering, and the Middle East continues to suffer political and economic chaos.

The question that burns within all of us is whether or not anything can be done, and if not, then what happens?

What if our visitors finally land? When I say ‘land,’ I do not mean that in any conventional way. I don’t think that they are aliens from another planet–or, if such beings are a factor in what is happening in our world, they are not the major factor. What is happening is so vast and complex that it has never really been fully described. But certainly, we are not dealing with scientists from another planet here studying us. What is happening is deeply embedded in human experience, and has been, I would think, throughout our history.

It was on this day ten years ago that Unknowncountry.com became a daily news site. We found ourselves publishing story after story on that day, about the horrifying events that were unfolding. Since then, we have not gone a single day without publishing fresh news stories. We concentrate on science, but with a uniquely open-minded perspective about the unknown, and have, like the rest of the United States and western civilization, grown out of the violence and terror of that day, rather than been defeated by it.

Budd Hopkins died on August 21 after a years-long struggle with cancer. He will be little remarked outside of the small community of witnesses and researchers who care about the great enigma that is the hidden center of the human experience, but the work he did in this world and on behalf of mankind was of incalculable importance and I hope one day that his achievement will be honored in the manner it deserves.
