In recent years, I have had a number of childhood memories emerge that disturb me very much. These memories are like the memories of many other people. And I have also found, buried in some old news stories, startling corroboration for one of them.

I have also found, in our society, an institution that was created by two accused child abusers, and has on its board advocates of pedophilia and CIA officers, which exists to discredit anybody who has such memories. This institution is called the False Memory Syndrome Foundation. I will be addressing it later.

Anne and I are giving each other Valentines via our journals. I won’t know what she’s written until she posts her new diary, and she won’t know what I’ve written until she sees this journal on the site.

Anne, even though we’ve been married 32 years, this Valentine’s message feels as fresh and wonderful as the first Valentine I ever gave you. As the years have passed, though, I’ve find myself able to look back on ever more happiness. And yet, I always remember that first moment, that is engraved on my soul.

I’d been living alone in New York for about six months and I was LONELY. I was the kind of guy that girls just automatically counted out–not handsome enough, no money, and unwilling to romanticize my job or anything like that.

Last night I read a document that turned my blood to ice.

The document I am referring to was created by John Ashcroft last month and presently exists in draft form. It is called the Domestic Security Enhancement Act of 2003. It has thus far been given to only two members of congress that I know of, the Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, and Vice-President Cheney as President Pro-Tem of the Senate.

There is tremendous worldwide sorrow over the loss of the seven astronauts aboard the space shuttle. It’s much greater than the sadness that would attend the loss of a 747 with 350 people aboard.

There is a reason for this, and it is a good one: our astronauts are at the leading edge of human endeavour. They are carefully chosen for their accomplishments, abilities and general excellence. They are the best we have, striding into danger with a smile and a wave.

Among the most vivid memories of my life are the moment when the Apollo capsule burned in January of 1967, and the stunning sight of Challenger exploding. I will never forget the power of those images, the shock, and then the deep, abiding fear that crept in afterward.
