Interesting about the Thunderbird, I live very near the area where Native Americans had the legend of the Piasa bird. There is a bluff on the Illinois side of the river, along the Great River Road, I think near Grafton, where the native peoples had painted a depiction of this large bird. The original picture has faded, but a local art class repainted it on another bluff along the Great River Road. There are stories of it having carried people away in its talons, and there is even a story from, I believe, the ’70s, of a boy in Illinois who was nearly carried away by one of these large birds.

Traditional Indians say the thunderbird comes in and carries lightning and thunder. That’s why it is called “thunderbird.” It has a large wingspan, that’s for sure. But lightning and thunder are its most distinguishing characteristics. I double checked a common reference, just to make sure my understanding is correct. “The Thunderbird is a legendary creature in certain North American indigenous peoples’ history and culture. It is considered a “supernatural” bird of power and strength. It is especially important, and richly depicted, in the art, songs and oral histories of many Pacific Northwest Coast cultures, and is found in various forms among the peoples of the American Southwest and Great Plains.
