On his 40th birthday, June 13, 1985, Whitley Strieber was six months away from an event that would change his life and ultimately also change the world. A little over a year after his December, 26, 1985 close encounter and abduction, he published Communion, which has turned out to be the book that started a process of contact with an unknown intelligence he calls “the visitors,” and which has played an important role in leading the way to eventual acceptance of their presence and a new future for mankind as a cosmic species.
Now it’s June 13, 2025, 40 years later, and he has given his life to this effort. Here, he looks back on the occasion of his 80th birthday to the high points of his long life in close encounter, and forward into the future of the human interaction with our visitors. He also tells some truly hilarious stories from his childhood, and some profound ones, and reveals for the first time some of the truly explosive things he has come to know.

December, 26, 1985…Was on my birthday. What are the odds? 🙂
What are the odds, indeed. What are the odds of any of this! (but I love that synchronicity of your birthday and Whitley’s major experience, Cosmic.)

Happy 80th birthday, Whitley! My fellow Gemini! ♊️ I hope you’re celebrating just the way you want to. Enjoy!
Warmest birthday wishes and many happy returns to you Whitley!
Regarding childhood memories, I can go back all the way to my infancy. Some of them are only snippets, brief flashes. Many of them suffused with the memory of being fully alive and soaking in every bit of physical sensation my fresh body was able to absorb. Some of my friends have said they can only remember back to when they were only seven or eight. I pity them.
Love and best wishes for your birthday, Whitley. You are truly a treasure. Thank you for all you have done and for what you still do.
Happy b’earth day, Whitley! I’ve been with DL since 1999, the days of terrestrial radio. Vivre Whitley, Anne and Unknown Country and our community.
I love this– b’earth day!
Soooo late wishing you a Happy Birthday!!! I love the joy in your voice as you recall your stories. I can’t stop smiling over Chicken Cat! 🐈 Know you are well-loved by this 70-year-old subscriber.
A very happy birthday Whitley !
I have read your books since Communion and loved when you were on Art’s show and then took over Dreamland.
I’ve been a subscriber since almost the start and I’ve loved all of the fabulous discussions over the years.
I hate to bring this up on your 80th birthday but the passage of time is looking us in the face and I remember so many wonderful guests and hosts that are no longer with us.
You have to start with Anne, her passing left such a hole as did Jim Marrs. I miss Stanton Friedman, Budd Hopkins and of course Art Bell.
I’m sure I missed some but besides missing these people and their work, where are their replacements ?
I don’t see many younger people getting into the field and I fear when you and this generation of researchers are gone, so much research will end and be lost as websites get destroyed and books go out of print.
So a very happy birthday Whitley and I hope you have many more.
Happy Birthday Whitley!
Indeed, Happy Birthday and joyous blessings to you Mr Strieber.
Bless you.
Stories from a life! I’ve been waiting for this to continue. Thank you!
Happy Birthday, Mr. Strieber! Thank you for your books over the years. Without Communion and Transformation i would have been lost as the visitors entered my life.
Happy Birthday, Whitley. I turned 90 on the 11th. I don’t know how one can explain the saying that the good die young!
Happy Birthday, Whitley!🎂
Your story of the firecrackers in the toaster made me laugh so hard! Thank you! I already have those special happy memories that I return to when I’m down. It really works. This was a wonderful sharing of memories with your community. 💗

Ive been around since Communion came out and you have weaved in and out of my life at different times with your books . I still hope to meet you some day. Have a blessed birthday.
Happy Birthday Whitley! Thanks for all you do!
Since today is the 15th of June, HAPPY FATHERS DAY!
Beautiful show. You are a brilliant artist thank you for sharing so evocatively the magic and mischief and most importantly creative imagination (of childhood and your ability to continue this very particular magic) which I believe sparks everything. Happy Birthday and many healthy wonderful productive returns.
Happy birthday and big congratulations for surviving 80 years on this difficult planet! And a belated happy Father’s Day as well.
I am fascinated by your memory of coming into the womb. I’ve known some who remembered infancy but not that.
And I’m alarmed by the incredibly dangerous stunts you pulled as a boy! Kind of amazing that you lived to adulthood!
As a mother of two sons, none of it surprises me! From stories my spouse has told me about things that he and his brother did as kids…let’s just say that I don’t know how they survived either.
Wishing you the happiest of birthdays!
You are a national treasure. ❤️
Whitley, Happy birthday! It was such a wonderful video to watch with your smiling face on YouTube. You are such a little devil as a kid! Firecrackers in a toaster who would guess! You don’t have closed captioning on YouTube and I did have a question about which Vedic scripture you recommended reading? I couldn’t quite make out what you said. I have also, as you mentioned, been one of the ones with you since Communion came out, and very early on the message board. Thank you for all you do! And happy birthday again!
I wish you many more trochoidal dances around Sol.
Happy Birthday to you Whitley! I’ve been magnetized towards you and your writings like no other writer I’ve experienced in my life. It’s been that way since I was a teenager, and I’m now 42. Dreamland turning into an internet only show was one of the reasons I paid for a dial-up internet service provider at around age 19. I love you.
Whitley, Happy belated Birthday. How I loved listening to your recollections of your childhood and earlier life, and your musing on Life, Love, the Visitors, the Universe, and else. Poignant, funny, profound.
I am about to turn 64, and aging is the most astonishingly strange thing. I think really we are Beings whose souls are out of time, yet we have to experience time here, and for me, the mismatch between how I perceive time — how old I am on the inside, how long ago (or not) 40 years seems to be — and how it has passed on the outside, is sometimes funny, sometimes uncomfortable, always a little surprising.
Thank you for this sharing of yourself.
