After David Grusch suggested that some nonhuman intelligences may take the form of “sentient plasmoid life,” a pair of papers by Harvard astrophysicist Dr. Rudolph Schild examines whether organized plasma phenomena in Earth’s atmosphere could represent an unconventional form of life.
In Unknowncountry‘s recent coverage of David Grusch’s renewed disclosure statements, the former intelligence officer argued that nonhuman intelligence (NHI) may not represent a single category of beings, but rather a “continuum” of life forms. During a public discussion, Grusch reportedly included what he described as “sentient plasmoid life” among the possibilities under consideration.
The comment stood out because it diverged sharply from the popular image of extraterrestrial visitors as biological beings piloting advanced craft. Yet while the idea may sound exotic, it is not entirely without scientific discussion.
Recent papers by Harvard astrophysicist Dr. Rudolph Schild and his collaborators explore the possibility that certain plasma phenomena observed in Earth’s atmosphere may exhibit characteristics associated with living systems. Their work, published in the Journal of Modern Physics in 2024 and 2025, examines whether some unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) could be related to organized plasmoid structures rather than conventional aircraft, natural weather events, or extraterrestrial vehicles.
In the 2024 paper, Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena, Extraterrestrial Life, Plasmoids, Shape Shifters, Replicons, Thunderstorms, Lightning, Hallucinations, Aircraft Disasters, Ocean Sightings, Schild and his co-authors review reports of luminous atmospheric objects, recurring UAP observations, and unusual plasma phenomena. The authors suggest that some sightings may involve self-organizing plasmoids capable of complex behavior.
Their 2025 follow-up article, Plasmas: A Fourth Domain of Life? RNA-DNA Consciousness and Statistical Analysis of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena in the Thermosphere, advances an even more provocative question: could plasma-based entities represent a previously unrecognized form of life?
The researchers point to observations drawn from atmospheric monitoring data and NASA archival imagery that they argue reveal persistent, structured plasma formations in the thermosphere. According to the paper, some of these phenomena appear capable of maintaining coherent forms, changing shape, and interacting with their environment in ways that the authors believe warrant further investigation.
Importantly, these claims remain highly speculative. Plasma-based life has not been established by mainstream science, and no scientific consensus currently recognizes plasmoids as living organisms. Many physicists would interpret the reported observations through known plasma dynamics rather than biology.
Nevertheless, Grusch’s recent remarks have placed the concept into a broader public conversation. If nonhuman intelligence exists and encompasses a wider range of life forms than traditionally imagined, then the possibility of plasma-based entities becomes a question that some researchers believe deserves investigation rather than dismissal.
Whether Schild’s and his co-authors’ hypothesis ultimately proves correct, partially correct, or entirely mistaken remains unknown. But the convergence between Grusch’s comments and emerging research illustrates a larger shift occurring within the UAP discussion: questions once confined to the margins are increasingly being examined through formal scientific inquiry.
For now, the idea of “sentient plasmoid life” remains a hypothesis. Yet it is one that appears to be moving from conference discussions and disclosure debates into the pages of peer-reviewed literature.

Maybe they were ahead of their time…Star Trek, too. None of this sounds far-fetched…Science: Can’t live with it, can’t live without it.🙄
That’s amazing!
And Star Trek– yes, multiple cloud-like sentient beings. Who could forget The Companion in the episode “Metamorphosis”?
I noticed a video titled something like “Is Fog Alive?” and for a moment thought it was talking about some sort of cloudlike being. It was simply about microbes that live in fog and create a community. But that’s pretty cool too.
