We recently wrote about abig wave thatwill inevitably drown the East Coast of the U.S.?but nobodyknows when it will come. This will happen when a collapsingvolcano in the Canary Islands finally drops into the sea.But now oceanographer Russell Wynn says, “?If you drop abrick into a bath [tub] you get a big splash, but if youbreak that brick up into several pieces and drop them in oneby one, you get several small splashes. Therefore amulti-stage failure would certainly not generate tsunamiscapable of damaging the coastlines of southern England orthe American east coast….”
Wynn says, “The Canary Islands are volcanic islands thatcollapse at regular intervals in geological time. However,it is important to remember that in the last 200,000 yearsthere have only been two major landslides on the flanks ofthe Canary Islands? We have studied previous Canary Islandslandslides to understand how they move, and have found goodevidence to show that the landslides actually break up andfall into the sea in several stages.
“The mega-tsunami scenario currently being aired in themedia is a hypothetical ‘worst case’, and is largely basedupon speculative computer models of landslide motion andtsunami generation. In contrast, our work involves study ofactual landslide deposits.”
