In the movie Braveheart, Mel Gibson led a group of Scottish warriors who painted their faces blue. Now it turns out they may have known what they were doing: the blue dye they used contains a powerful breast cancer-fighting substance called woad, which belongs to the same family as broccoli and cauliflower (which are also good cancer preventatives).
BBC news reports that Italian researchers discovered discovered that woad contains 20 times more of the cancer preventative called glucobrassicin than broccoli does, and it?s especially effective against breast cancer. Damaging the leaves makes the plant EVEN MORE effective?for the same reason that organic vegetables are healthier than plants sprayed with pesticides. Studies show that glucobrasicin may be able to flush extraneous estrogen out of the body, which could make it especially important to feed these foods to baby boys.
