A LOT Cooler – What’s happening with the Sun? (NOTE: Subscribers can still listen to this show). First, the Gulf Stream is slowing down, which means markedly colder winters are on the way, from the US Mid-Atlantic states to the countries surrounding the North Sea. Second, it appears that the Sun’s magnetic field is weakening, meaning that there will be less solar activity and less warmth from the Sun. The combination of these two factors is likely to cause dramatic medium term cooling in the northern hemisphere, and could set the stage for intense storms, such as the storms depicted in Whitley Strieber and Art Bell’s book The Coming Global Superstorm, which he then wrote about in his book which became the hit film The Day After Tomorrow.
First, to the great puzzlement of scientists, the Sun is getting increasingly dormant. We don’t understand what this means for the long-term yet, but for the SHORT term, it means COLDER winters. In Newsnet5.com, Mark Johnson reports that sseveral scientists predict this could be the coldest winter in Europe for the last 1,000 years, and this is may be true for parts of the US as well.
Polish scientists say this is because the Gulf Stream, the warm current of water that travels from the Tropical Atlantic up along the East Coast and over to Europe and brings warmer temperatures to Europe, has slowed down in the last 2 years. In fact, it’s now moving at just half the speed it was just a couple of years ago.
On the Discovery News website, Ian O’Neill writes, “Although the sun is our nearest star, it certainly isn’t ready to give away many clues as to how it works quite yet.”
