Curiosity Captures a ‘Jellyfish’ Shape on Mars, Echoing Earthly UAP Reports

A bizarre shape resembling a dangling jellyfish has appeared in a NASA image from Mars, inviting comparisons with enigmatic “jellyfish” UAP footage recorded on Earth. But NASA imagery offers an important clue: The Martian apparition may have originated inside Curiosity’s camera rather than in the Martian sky.

A strange, dark form resembling a jellyfish appears to float above the Martian landscape in an image captured by NASA’s Curiosity rover — an uncanny silhouette reminiscent of several “jellyfish” UAPs reported here on Earth.

But appearances may be deceiving.

According to NASA’s Mars Exploration Program, Curiosity’s Right Navigation Camera recorded the image Aug. 20, 2023, at 22:27:46 UTC. Two images of the same scene taken 13 and 25 seconds earlier show no comparable object. ScienceAlert reported that the fleeting shape is therefore likely a camera artifact, possibly caused when a high-energy cosmic ray struck the NavCam’s silicon detector. NASA has separately documented cosmic rays producing black artifacts in Curiosity imagery.

However, that explanation has not been specifically confirmed for this image by Curiosity’s imaging team, according to ScienceAlert. Other camera or processing artifacts cannot yet be excluded.

The image nevertheless invites comparison with unusual “jellyfish” objects recorded on Earth.

As Unknown Country previously reported, infrared footage reportedly recorded over a U.S.-operated military installation in Iraq in 2017 showed an amorphous object with dangling structures moving through the air. Filmmaker Jeremy Corbell later released the footage. Claims that the object entered water and subsequently accelerated away at extreme speed came from Corbell’s sources and have not been independently established; former Marine Sgt. Michael Cincoski, who said he later viewed a longer recording, disputed that the footage he saw showed the object entering the water.

More recently, the Pentagon released infrared footage of another jellyfish-like object observed above the Atlantic Ocean in 2020. Unknown Country reported that military personnel estimated it at approximately 12 to 15 feet tall and described it as resembling “a large, somewhat deformed balloon.” It traveled with the wind without apparent maneuvering, making a conventional airborne object a plausible explanation.

Indeed, the Martian “jellyfish” may demonstrate precisely why unusual imagery demands caution: A shape that evokes something extraordinary can sometimes arise from the instruments through which we observe it.

The visual resemblance among these cases is intriguing, but there is currently no verified evidence connecting them. Unknown Country will continue to follow the “jellyfish UFO” phenomenon.
