Daylight “Saucer” Reported Over California Was Likely a Stratospheric Airship

Seven witnesses reportedly watched and filmed a bright object over La Mesa, California, but related sightings investigated by NUFORC point toward an unusual stratospheric aircraft.

Seven people reportedly watched a brilliant object in the afternoon sky over La Mesa, California, on Sept. 4, 2026,  producing video that appeared, under magnification, to show something resembling a metallic disc, as reported by SANDIEGOVILLE. Witness video was posted to Reddit and other social media websites. But evidence that has emerged since the sighting now points toward an unusual terrestrial explanation: a high-altitude stratospheric platform returning from a trans-Pacific mission.

According to a copy of National UFO Reporting Center Sighting No. 200712 circulated with the footage, the observation began at approximately 2:24 p.m. The reporting witness said the object initially resembled a star before phone magnification revealed what the witness interpreted as a “metallic saucer.” Seven observers reportedly watched it for about 10 minutes as it remained nearly stationary and then moved east. Those details come from the submitted witness account and have not been independently verified by Unknown Country.

The timing is significant.

NUFORC received other reports of a bright, reflective object over the San Diego area that afternoon. One occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m., just minutes before the La Mesa report. After investigating that case and comparing it with other observations, NUFORC investigator Lynda S. Thompson concluded that the sightings resulted from a Sceye high-altitude platform tracked as HBAL124. A retired aerospace engineer who submitted one of the reports subsequently agreed with that identification after reviewing additional information, according to NUFORC.

The company itself supplies an important piece of corroboration. Sceye announced Sept. 9 that its Service Test 1 platform re-entered the continental United States on Sept. 4 after traveling nearly 30,000 kilometers from New Mexico to Japan and back. The aircraft reached the vicinity of the company’s Moriarty, New Mexico, headquarters the following day.

Contemporary San Diego observers also reported seeing a highly reflective, blimp-like object, with online observers linking it to flight identifier HBAL124. Those reports are anecdotal but consistent with NUFORC’s later investigation.

The available evidence therefore makes Sceye’s platform a strong conventional explanation for the La Mesa sighting. However, Unknown Country has not independently matched the original La Mesa video files against HBAL124’s precise position at 2:24 p.m., so the identification of that specific recording should be considered highly plausible rather than conclusively established.

Sometimes a worthwhile UAP investigation does not deepen the mystery. It resolves it — and shows why identification requires more than an extraordinary-looking image.
