Months before her death, Princess Diana wrote a letter to her butler Paul Burrell saying she was afraid that someone was planning to kill her in a staged car accident. She said she feared having “an accident in my car, brake failure and serious head injury in order to make the path clear for Charles to marry.”
Burrell has written a book about his life with Diana called “A Royal Duty.” About the letter, Diana said, “I’m going to date this and I want you to keep it?just in case.” She named the person she believed was plotting against her but it hasn’t been revealed, out of fear of a lawsuit. Diana died in August, 1997 in Paris in a car crash that also killed her companion, Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul. A French judge has ruled that neither Paul’s use of drugs and alcohol, nor the car’s high speed, could have caused the accident.
Burrell says, “She certainly felt that?as long as she was on the scene, Prince Charles could never properly move on. That letter had been part of the burden I have carried since the princess’ death. Knowing what to do with it has been a source of much soul-searching.”
According to the butler’s book, Prince Philip wrote Diana in 1992 that, “I cannot imagine anyone in their right mind leaving you for Camilla. We do not approve of either of you having lovers. Charles was silly to risk everything with Camilla for a man in his position. We never dreamed he might feel like leaving you for her. Such a prospect never even entered our heads.”
But while Philip wasn’t happy with his son’s behavior, he thought Diana was responsible for the breakup of their marriage. He wrote, “Can you honestly look into your heart and say that Charles’s relationship with Camilla had nothing to do with your behavior towards him in your marriage?” So far, there has been no British investigation into Diana’s death. A spokesman for the Prime Minister says, “Everybody knows there has been an exhaustive investigation by the French authorities into the circumstances surrounding Diana’s death and there will be nothing to be gained from repeating that here.”
We all wish we could predict what will happen in the future?but is it really a gift?
