The Wednesday, September 5 edition of Filers Files reports that on July 25 the National Institute for Discovery Science (NIDS) sent a Freedom of Information Act request to the FAA asking for the radar tapes for July 14-15, the period of the Carteret UFO sightings in New Jersey. NIDS also requested the tower voice tapes from Newark International Airport. NIDS is a privately funded organization in Las Vegas that studies anomalous events.
FAA reports reveal that unidentified flying objects without transponders were detected on air traffic control radar in the airspace around Newark International Airport on the night of July 14-15. Since all commercial aircraft have transponders, it means that these aircraft were unidentified. Seventy eyewitnesses on the New Jersey Turnpike and fifty witnesses from Staten Island reported mysterious lights in the sky during this period of time.
A request to check for aircraft without transponders flying at the same time on a different night, for purposes of comparison, produced the result that no objects without transponders were flying near Newark International airport on another, randomly chosen night. This is good evidence that something unusual was going on during those two nights in July.

Insight: There was a time when such an FAA report would not have been routinely released. This represents a quiet policy change on the part of the US government. We are now accepting that UFOs are genuine unknowns. But what kind of unknowns? We’re not quite there yet.
