It helps to eat the right foods! – Scientists are about to embark on a human trial to test whether a new cancer treatment will be as effective at eradicating cancer in humans as it has proven to be in mice. The treatment will involve transfusing specific white blood cells, called granulocytes, into patients with advanced forms of cancer. A similar treatment using white blood cells from cancer-resistant mice has previously been highly successful, curing 100% of lab mice with advanced malignancies. The donors will be healthy young people who have been identified as having immune systems that produce white blood cells with high levels of cancer-fighting activity.
Researcher Zheng Cui says, “In mice, we’ve been able to eradicate even highly aggressive forms of malignancy with extremely large tumors. Hopefully, we will see the same results in humans. Our laboratory studies indicate that this cancer-fighting ability is even stronger in healthy humans.”
Just eating PART of what’s called the “Mediterranean Diet” could reduce the risk of cancer by 12%. Just using more olive oil will cut the risk by 9%. Eating more fruit, vegetables and cereals and eating less red meat will help even more. And eating broccoli is one of things that helps men avoid prostate cancer.
BBC News quotes cancer researcher Sara Hiom as saying, “It shows there are a number of things you can do, and there is no one ‘superfood’ that can stop you developing the disease.”
But if there IS a “superfood,” it might be the humble mushroom. They are high in antioxidants, selenium, riboflavin and other healthful substances that protect the immune system and fight cancer. Mushrooms contain high amounts of beta-glucans, compounds that occur in the bran of cereal grains and in yeast. These substances help to keep immune cells in a state of vigilance. This substance is produced in the soil and transported through the mushroom’s roots.
It’s been a long struggle, but we’re finally getting there?cancer may soon become a disease of the past.
