Will they be intelligent machines? Quantum physicist Stephen Hawking thinks that it’s “perfectly rational” to assume that intelligent life exists elsewhere else in the universe. But he thinks aliens should do everything possible to avoid making contact with them.
Hawking warns that aliens might simply raid Earth for its resources, and then move on. BBC News quotes Hawking as saying, “If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans. We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet, and says, “To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational, The real challenge is to work out what aliens might actually be like.”
