We’ve been reassured that low doses of X-rays, like the ones we get at the dentist’s office, are not harmful. But now researcher Markus Lobrich says they may be even MORE harmful than higher doses of X-rays. Low doses of X-rays may actually do long-lasting damage to cells.
Lobrich exposed human cell cultures to varying amounts of X-rays in a laboratory and was surprised to find that damage from low radiation levels lingered for days and weeks longer than damage caused by more powerful levels. Lobrich thinks this is because the body doesn’t recognize lower levels of radiation, so it doesn’t do anything to repair the damaged cause by them. Then when these damaged cells divide and multiply, the unrepaired damage multiplies along with them. Radiation of the kind produced by X-rays can cause leukemia and other cancers.
