According to a mathematician, the New York Yankees will win 110 games this season, more than any other major league team.

Mathematician Bruce Bukiet of the New Jersey Institute of Technology has used the same computer program for the past 6 years to predict how many games each team will win. He bases his predictions on data which shows how each hitter is likely to perform against each pitcher.

In LiveScience.com, Andrea Thompson quotes Bukiet as saying that he can predict baseball (and cricket) wins?as opposed to other sports?because baseball consists of “a whole sequence of one-on-one events” that, according to Thompson, “are easier to compare than team sports where multiple players affect the outcome of an event,” although he can’t factor in trades and injuries that may occur during the season.

Bukiet is a Mets fan.
