A rancher in rural Argentina says he discovered a horse dead under deeply unusual circumstances: precise cuts on the body, no visible blood, no signs of struggle, and scavengers refusing to approach the carcass. The incident is the latest in a series of unexplained animal mutilation reports that have revived long-standing fears surrounding the so-called chupacabra phenomenon.

A rural community in Argentina is once again confronting a mystery that has long haunted parts of Latin America and the American West: unexplained animal mutilations with seemingly impossible characteristics.

In May 2026, a rancher in the area of Buenos Aires reported finding one of his horses dead under disturbing circumstances. According to graphic and disturbing local media reports, the animal bore what witnesses described as “surgical and precise” cuts on different parts of its body.

What alarmed the rancher most was not only the nature of the wounds, but what appeared to be missing from the scene.

“There are no traces of blood at the scene or on the wounds,” the man reportedly told Radio Génesis. He also noted that there were no signs of a struggle, no tracks from predators, and no evidence of human activity such as footprints or tire marks nearby.

“The animal did not defend itself or have any reaction,” he said. “They always kick or leave traces of the struggle, but this was as if it had been something instantaneous.”

The case has drawn additional attention because local scavengers reportedly avoided the carcass.

Residents say this is not an isolated event. According to local accounts, similar mutilations involving cattle were reported earlier in 2025 and went back as far as 2020 on nearby properties.

No official explanation has yet been offered by veterinary or police authorities. While some observers point to natural predation, decomposition, or human involvement, others in the region have revived speculation surrounding the legendary “chupacabra,” a folkloric creature blamed for mysterious livestock deaths across Latin America for decades.

Animal mutilation cases have periodically surfaced around the world, often sharing recurring features: unusual excisions, a lack of blood, minimal evidence at the scene, and scavengers avoiding the remains. Despite years of investigation in multiple countries, many incidents remain unresolved.
