Biologists have tried panda porn, with good results (and pornography is not necessarily a bad thing). Now scientists have started an online dating service for orangutans.
Mike Corder writes in LiveScience.com that zookeepers in the Netherlands are trying to find mates for their orangs from zoos in Indonesia, which is their natural habitat. The primates will actually SEE each other on computer video cams, and zookeepers will look for signs of interest. The animals will even be able to interact at a distance. In LiveScience.com, Mike Corder quotes Anouk Ballot, who works at the Apenheul ape park in the Netherlands, as saying that the orangs will be able to press a button and “give one another food.” Wild orangutans are almost extinct, due to the cutting down of their jungle habitats, so zoo breeding may be the last chance to save this species from extinction.
