Why do soldiers risk their lives in wars, and then come home and kill themselves? The US Army has recently announced that there were a record number of suicides among soldiers last month. If this keeps up, more soldiers will have killed themselves last month than died in combat.
In CNN.com, Barbara Starr and Mike Mount quotes an Army official as saying, “This is terrifying. We do not know what is going on.”
They quote Army psychologist Col. Kathy Platoni as saying it could be partly due to the weather: “There is more hopelessness and helplessness because everything is so dreary and cold.” But she certainly doesn’t blame it all on the weather. The reporters also quote her as saying, “When people are apart you have infidelity, financial problems, substance abuse and child behavioral problems. The more deployments, the more it is exacerbated.”
