Scientists are surprised to find that four dormant volcanoes in South America are actually active, a discovery that has serious implications for volcanic areas around the world. They used satellite imaging techniques to study the volcanoes and found that 900 of them in the Andes mountains in Chile are still potentially dangerous.
Mark Simons of the California Institute of Technology says, “This suggests that, for most of the world’s volcanoes, we have no idea of their level of activity. [It] really promotes the idea that we need to start developing a census of the world’s volcanoes to look at the level of their activity.” Many more volcanoes that were considered dormant could actually be active, in other parts of the world. But being active doesn?t necessarily mean it will erupt.
To be safe, we should keep up on current volcano activity worldwide.
Even Nostradamus couldn?t always predict when a volcano was ready to blow.
