Researchers have discovered a link between solar flares and radioactive elements on Earth. Amazing as it sounds, the sun, 93 million miles away, seems to be influencing the decay of radioactive elements inside the Earth. David Sereda talks with William Henry about this in the latest Revelations.
On December 13, 2006, a solar flare sent a stream of particles and radiation towards the Earth. While measuring the decay rate of manganese-54, nuclear engineer Jere Jenkins noticed that the rate of decay dropped slightly during the flare–in fact, the decrease started a day and a half BEFORE the flare. In Stanford News, Dan Stober quotes physicist Peter Sturrock as saying, "Everyone thought it must be due to experimental mistakes, because we’re all brought up to believe that decay rates are constant."
Stober quotes Jenkins as saying, "What we’re suggesting is that something that doesn’t really interact with anything is changing something that can’t be changed."
