New research shows that old age does not stop people from enjoying sex. With Viagra, there is even less problem–but it COULD lead to a population explosion!
The little blue pill may do more than get the blood pumping. It turns out that Viagra also increases release of a reproductive hormone in rats. This could be the beginning of a population explosion if older men using Viagra have sex with younger women who are still fertile.
Researcher Meyer Jackson says, "This is one piece in a puzzle in which many pieces are still not available, but it raises the possibility that erectile dysfunction drugs could be doing more than just affecting erectile dysfunction."
Meanwhile, BBC News reports that a survey of over 3,000 Americans age 57 to 85 revealed that people often remain sexually active into their eighties. Researcher Edward Laumann says, "There are a lot of people who feel that age is very tightly correlated with sexual activity or interest, but it turns out that healthy people are sexually active if they have a partner, and that this is an important part of the quality of life." Three-quarters of people 57 to 64 reported having sex several times a month. Over half of those 64 to 75 reported the same thing and one-quarter of those 75 to 85 are still doing it.
