The British Royal Academy of Engineering has completed a study of the UK power grid showing that it is relatively well prepared to weather a solar superstorm–but the opposite is true in the United States.
It turns out that explosive eruptions of energy from the sun are fairly common. In BBC News, Jonathan Amos quotes the UK study as saying that If a solar superstorm struck the Earth, the effects on the UK would be "challenging but not cataclysmic."
He quotes space engineer Keith Ryden as saying, "Fortunately, satellites are already designed to deal with a lot of this space weather."
In congressional testimony in September of 2012, experts said that the US power grid remains extremely vulnerable to such events, and, if the grid were to collapse, life would be "unsustainable" for 70 to 90% of the American population. In other words, the United States would be killed.
The Shield Act (HR-668) was introduced by Rep. Trent Franks in 2011, but was not passed. The act would create regulations that would require the utility industry to carry out the relatively simple steps necessary to protect our grid, and the few billion dollars it would cost to do this is much less than the tens of billions or hundreds of billions it could cost to repair the damage.
On the WND website, Michael Maloof quotes Franks as saying, "The potential threat is damage to the transformers, either from a solar storm or the effects of an electromagnetic pulse from a high-altitude nuclear explosion. The threat of an electromagnetic pulse weapon represents the single greatest asymmetric capability that could fall into the hands of American enemies.
"Should a nuclear weapon from a rogue state such as Iran be detonated in Earth’s atmosphere at a sufficient height above the continental United States, the blast of electromagnetic energy could immediately cripple America’s electric power grid."
He quotes Joseph McClellan, director of the Office of Electric Reliability in the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, as saying that the FERC is considering actions to address national security threats to the reliability of the US transmission and power system from an EMP "which undergirds our government and economy and helps ensure the health and welfare of our citizens.
"The question is how to do that."
Whitley Strieber has the ANSWER to that question in his ebook Solar Flares, which is available for all ereaders and can be purchased on the Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Apple sites for your reader for $3.99. Read it and send your representatives a letter or email demanding that the Shield Act be reintroduced and passed immediately.
